History of Grama Panchayat
Pookkottur Grama Panchayat is a historically important local self-government institution located in Eranad Taluk of Malappuram district, Kerala. The region is well known for its cultural heritage, agricultural background, and its significant role in the Malabar Rebellion of 1921.
Early History
Pookkottur was traditionally an agrarian village where people mainly depended on paddy cultivation, coconut farming, and small-scale trade for their livelihood. Due to its fertile land and strategic location near Manjeri and Malappuram towns, the area gradually developed into an active rural settlement.
Role in the Malabar Rebellion of 1921
Pookkottur gained historical prominence during the 1921 Malabar Rebellion (Mappila Rebellion) against British colonial rule. One of the major battles of the rebellion, known as the “Battle of Pookkottur,” took place here between British forces and local Mappila fighters. The battle became a symbol of resistance and sacrifice in Kerala’s history. Memorials such as the Pookkottur War Memorial and Pookkottur Gate were later established to commemorate those who lost their lives in the struggle.

After the introduction of the Panchayati Raj system in Kerala, Pookkottur was officially constituted as a Grama Panchayat to strengthen local self-governance and rural development. The Panchayat became responsible for implementing welfare schemes and improving public services in the region.
